Minutes from AGSC meeting

Sept. 8, 2008

Opening:

The regular meeting of the AGSC was called to order at 4:40 on September 8, 2008 in ANTH 220 by Shanna Cox, Interim President.

A.         Approval of Agenda

The agenda was unanimously approved as distributed.

B.          Approval of Minutes

There were no previous minutes

C.          Open Issues

1. RSO paperwork and Constitution was distributed and all agreed to move on to the next stage of filing paperwork with campus activities.

2. General benefits of a Graduate student organization discussed and approved.

3. Discussion of the duties of Faculty representative. Duties to include attending Faculty meeting related to graduate student issues, representing AGSC at said meetings and providing regular updates at AGSC meetings.

3. Interim officers agreed to continue serving, once paperwork approved, until next elections in May. Discussion of interim elections tabled to next meeting.

4. Meeting times were changed to 5pm on Mondays.

5. Discussion of setting up practice session for presenters at the Plain. To be held on September 26 at 6 pm with pizza provided by AGSC.  Approved though time may change.

6. Floor turned over to J. Gingerich.

a. Nicole wants to set up a display with graduate student bios and pictures for Plains Conference, this would include display of publications completed since students have been at UWYO. The information submitted for WebBios could be used.

b. Schedule of faculty meetings is roughly Wednesday at noon once a month which does not include meetings of sub committees.

7. Floor turned over to E. Lynch and C. Montgomery.

a. Review set up of live Anthro website. Doctoral students have been updated. MA student site visited but needs complete overhauled. Discussed getting a link for MA students on Faculty/Staff page. Discussed general layout of an AGSC page with links to graduate students. Discussed new layout of graduate student page. Discussed layout of new Anthro page that is slated to go live sometime this Fall.

b. General plans of action recommended: Doctoral student WebBios will be completed over the next two weeks. AGSC website to be completed over next 3 weeks along with new graduate student information page the latter to have preference for completion by Plains Conference.

c. Discussion of student web pages. Students interested should contact C. Montgomery for training and help. These should supplement WebBios.

8. Floor turned over to P. Mullen and D. Ridenour

a. $150 Travel voucher for students traveling to the Plains conference. Volunteers get free registration. Student presenters get two tickets to banquet. A volunteer presenter also gets a year subscription to the Plains Anthropologist publication. Fieldtrips are extra regardless.

b. Student competition. Top Award is $500.00. plus benefits named above.

c. Department Open house all expected to turnout.

d. Graduate recruiting fair with CRM and other agencies employing archaeologists will be held. Volunteers are needed for this as well.

9. Floor turned over to Meg.

a. Computer Lab Room 335. Schedule passed out. Open to graduate students during free hours. Your account will be charged for printing but this will not support replacement toner and paper (for which the Department must pay) so use it sparingly. Grad students should keep an eye out for facilities – make sure there’s no mess, light off when not in use, etc.

b. Wyoming Contributions to Archaeology – peer reviewed publication. Deadline for abstracts is 17th of September. Final papers due by the end of semester.

 

D.         New Business

None discussed as such but action to be completed includes:

1. Signatures collected from graduate students not attending meeting in support of AGSC constitution.

2.  Organization paperwork needs to be filed at student activities

Meeting was adjourned at 5:40 by Shanna Cox. The next general meeting will be at 5 pm on Monday 13th October in ANTH 220 or TBA.
